You have got to be fucking kidding me.
On Monday, March 29th, the American University student newspaper The Eagle published a hateful and journalistically unsound column that made excuses for rape and blamed victims of sexual assault. We, as concerned members of the AU community, maintain that this rhetoric harms survivors of sexual assault, disregards journalistic ethics, and violates AU’s Student Code of Conduct. We wholeheartedly believe in every individual’s right to free speech. However, the Eagle, as a campus publication that serves the student body, has the responsibility to maintain editorial discretion and not serve as a platform for vicious diatribes that are harmful to the community.
The Eagle published a letter of apology in the April 1 issue and a letter from the administration. The Eagle apology was appreciated and various groups on campus are working to decide what our next steps should be. However, we feel that the letter from the administration was not adequate and we plan to address this directly with them.
